Our windows can be either single or double glazed. Single glazing is generally a requirement when replacing windows in listed properties, as the majority of local listed buildings officers have a strict "no double glazing" policy. Double glazing offers much higher levels of heat retention and noise reduction, is a requirement in all new buildings and generally used when replacing older windows in standard properties. The standard type of double glazing used is generally 4/16/4 Low-E (this means 4mm of glazing, a 16mm space and a further 4mm of glazing, with low emissivity or heat loss). This provides a u value (or heat loss value) as low as 1.4w/m2K, well within current building regulations. 4/12/4 is also available where the gap in the middle is filled with Argon gas.

Slim double glazed units can now be used in our windows, and these offer the benefits of standard types of double glazing whilst giving a much narrower profile (4/4/4 with the space filled with Krypton gas). These are generally more expensive than standard double glazed units but have the benefit of being occasionally accepted by the listed buildings officers.

All glazing has to be toughened in any window which reaches to below 800mm above floor level, and we will automatically advise our customers of any circumstances where toughened glass is a requirement.

Special Glass Type

We can arrange any type of special glass, such as encapsulated, leaded, coloured or "bullseye" - please ask if you have any special requirements as we have suppliers in all fields. Window fittings play an important part in the overall effect of a new or replacement window, and we can supply a wide range, from modern chrome or stainless steel to old fashioned brass or black antique. The pictures below show examples from our standard range, but we are always happy to source more abstract ranges to complete a certain look.

Paint and Stain Finishes

As explained, our windows come complete in every respect ( unless of course our customers wish otherwise- we can do as little or as much to comply with your budgetary and design considerations) and our standard finish is one coat of either high quality primer/undercoat or one coat of wood finish in a range of different shades. If however our customers have a personal preference, we can advise whether in our professional opinion this would be suitable for a given project. We are sometimes asked why, as a general rule, we do not apply the final coats of gloss to painted projects. This because installation of most projects will inevitably lead to the occasional minor nick to the paint, and we feel that this final coat is most usefully applied after installation in order to give the best result.
